10 Common eCommerce Mistakes
Did you know 2021 is estimated to have 2.14 million global digital buyers? With or without the pandemic, ecommerce has had steady growth for the past 10 years and currently accounts for 18.1% of retail sales worldwide. With that being said, now is the time to start selling online if you haven’t already. More than 1/3 of American small businesses DO NOT currently have a website!
Here are some common mistakes to look for in your ecommerce website.
No shop button present - Even if you have your products on your front page, you should have a shop button in your navigation. That way if a customer wanders to a different page, they can easily get back to shopping.
No value proposition - This is who you are! What value are you bringing to your customers and what sets YOU apart from your competitors?
Not mobile optimized - Need I say more? We live in a world where our phones are our computers. We see something we like, get redirected to a link and buy. Make sure you test out mobile compatibility with your website on a mobile device on EVERY PAGE.
No Brand Identity - Similar to value proposition, but your brand identity should be known throughout your webpage. This means figuring out who you are and making sure your products and pages are consistent with it.
No Call To Action - Typically, your call to action will be shopping, but other times you may want to send your customer to a promotion, or a service. Whatever it may be, you should have it easily visible on your homepage.
Poor Images - Crisp clear images of your products! The more, the better.
Poor Product Description - This isn’t just for your customers to see, this is also an organic way to boost your search rankings. Instead of “measuring spoons”, your description should say “Colorful, plastic measuring spoons including TSP, TBS..ect..” that way someone searching something more specific will more likely pull your product in their searches!
No Delivery Information - Customer’s LOVE free shipping! If you have it, ADVERTISE IT! If you don’t, that’s okay. Hopefully you have figured out a shipping strategy that works for you! Either way, make sure your delivery information is easily understood and displayed to help reduce cart abandonment.
No Social Proof - Social proof refers to authenticity. 70% of customers will leave a review when asked. So, ASK! Have your reviews visible. Social proof can also be a form of publication. If you’ve been featured in a known new source, show your new site visitors you can be trusted.
Not Enough Payment Options - Options, options, options! On top of accepting cards, PayPal is huge. It gives customers a sense of peace knowing they aren’t directly inputting their card information on multiple sites. Affirm, AfterPay, and Klarna are awesome payment options for Buy Now, Pay Later.
